OBJECTIVES: COVID-19 vaccines are widely available, but uptake is suboptimal. To develop strategies to increase vaccination rates, we sought to (1) characterize adults initially hesitant to be vaccinated for COVID-19 who later received the vaccine and (2) identify factors associated with their vaccination decision. METHODS: In January 2021, we conducted an online survey of US adults via Prolific that assessed vaccination intent, COVID-19-related knowledge and attitudes, and demographic characteristics. In May 2021, we recontacted respondents to assess vaccination status and factors influencing their vaccination decision. We used χ2 statistics and t tests to examine associations between respondents' vaccination status and their characteristics, knowledge, and attitudes. We analyzed reasons for vaccination using thematic analysis. RESULTS: Of 756 initially vaccine-hesitant respondents, 529 (70.0%) completed the follow-up survey. Nearly half of those initially not sure about vaccination (47.3%, 112 of 237) were vaccinated at follow-up, while 21.2% (62 of 292) of those initially planning not to be vaccinated were vaccinated at follow-up. Of those initially not sure, higher educational attainment, greater knowledge of COVID-19, and a doctor's recommendation were associated with vaccination. Of those initially intending not to be vaccinated, male sex, Democratic political affiliation, receipt of an influenza shot within 5 years, being more worried about COVID-19, and having greater COVID-19 knowledge were associated with increased likelihood of being vaccinated. Of 167 respondents who gave reasons for vaccination, protecting oneself and others (59.9%), practical issues (29.9%), social influences (17.4%), and vaccine safety (13.8%) were the main reasons. CONCLUSION: Providing information on the protective value of vaccination, implementing rules that make remaining unvaccinated burdensome, making vaccination easy, and providing social support may influence vaccine-hesitant adults to accept vaccination.

INTRODUCTION: Central retinal vein occlusions are not well-known complications of SARS-CoV-2 infection. We describe a case of central retinal vein occlusion secondary to COVID-19, and a review of the literature was performed. HISTORY AND SIGNS: A 47-year-old woman with no underlying ocular or medical condition presented to the hospital complaining about sudden onset of multiple scotomas in her left eye. A COVID-19 infection was confirmed 2 days previously by a PCR test that was performed 2 days after the onset of symptoms. Medical history revealed no risk factors and no oral contraception. Her best-corrected visual acuity was 1.0 in the right eye and 0.04 in the left eye. Clinical exam showed a left relative afferent pupillary defect and a nasally localized papilledema on fundoscopy of the left eye. Multiple dot and blot hemorrhages were also present. Optical coherence tomography revealed cystoid macular edema and paracentral acute middle maculopathy. The results of the fluoresceine angiography were consistent with central retinal vein occlusion. Laboratory workup later revealed an elevated fibrinogen level, corresponding to the COVID-19-induced hypercoagulable state. No other prothrombotic conditions were found. The patient immediately received an intravitreal injection of Lucentis (ranibizumab) after diagnosis. Complete resolution of the retinal hemorrhages and papilledema was observed 1.5 months after treatment and the final visual acuity was 1.25 in the left eye. CONCLUSION: Coagulation abnormalities are frequently observed in infectious diseases such as COVID-19 infection and the resulting prothrombotic state can sometimes lead to retinal vascular complications, including central retinal vein occlusion, irrespective of the presence of other classical risk factors. The consideration of this information could help clinicians establish a prompt diagnosis and therefore appropriate treatment, which could hopefully lead to complete healing of retinal lesions.

Financial distress is generally considered the most severe consequence for firms with poor financial performance. The emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic has adversely impacted the global business system and exacerbated the number of financially distressed firms in many countries. Only firms with strong financial fundamentals can survive extreme events such as the Covid-19 pandemic and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. Vietnam is no exception. However, studies examining financial distress using accounting-based indicators, particularly at the industry level, have largely been ignored in the Vietnamese context, particularly with the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic. This study, therefore, comprehensively examines financial distress for 500 Vietnamese listed firms during the 2012-2021 period. Our study uses interest coverage and times-interest-earned ratios to proxy a firm's financial distress. First, our findings confirm the validity of Altman's Z"- score model in Vietnam only when the interest coverage ratio is used as a proxy for financial distress. Second, our empirical findings indicate that only four financial ratios, including EBIT/Total Assets, Net Income/Total Assets, Total Liabilities/Total Assets, and Total Equity/Total Liabilities, can be used in predicting financial distress in Vietnam. Third, our analysis at the industry level indicates that the "Construction & Real Estates" industry, a significant contributor to the national economy, exhibits the most significant risk exposure, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic. Policy implications have emerged based on the findings from this study.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) virus (PEDV) is a highly contagious virus. PED was first identified in 2008 and has greatly affected the Vietnamese pig production economy. The aim of this study was to investigate the epidemiological and genetic characteristics of PEDV in piglet herds in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. Diarrheal stool and intestinal samples from 2262 piglets from 191 herds in five provinces were collected to test for the presence of PEDV. Ten PEDV strains were randomly selected for sequencing, and four genes encoding PEDV structural proteins were analyzed. The rates of herds and samples positive for PEDV were 27.23% and 27.72%, respectively. In positive herds, the morbidity and mortality of PEDV-positive piglets were 97.97% and 79.06%, respectively, with most of the infected piglets under 7 days of age. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the 10 PEDV strains from this study clustered with genotype G2 strains from Vietnam and neighboring countries. Many amino acid substitutions were identified in important antigenic regions in the spike protein of the 10 strains when compared to four PEDV vaccine strains. This study provides novel insights into the epidemiology and genetic diversity of circulating PEDV strains, which could facilitate the development of an appropriate and proactive strategy for controlling PED.

Multisystem inflammatory syndrome is associated with COVID-19 and can result in reduced food intake, increased muscle catabolism, and electrolyte imbalance. Therefore COVID-19 patients are at high risk of being malnourished and of refeeding syndrome. The present study aimed to determine the prevalence and correlates of malnutrition and refeeding syndrome (RS) among COVID-19 patients in Hanoi, Vietnam. This prospective cohort study analyzed data from 1207 patients who were treated at the COVID-19 hospital of Hanoi Medical University (HMUH COVID-19) between September 2021 and March 2022. Nutritional status was evaluated by the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) and laboratory markers. GLIM-defined malnutrition was found in 614 (50.9%) patients. Among those with malnutrition, 380 (31.5%) and 234 (19.4%) had moderate and severe malnutrition, respectively. The prevalence of risk of RS was 346 (28.7%). Those with severe and critical COVID symptoms are more likely to be at risk of RS compared to those with mild or moderate COVID, and having severe and critical COVID-19 infection increased the incidence of RS by 2.47 times, compared to mild and moderate disease. There was an association between levels of COVID-19, older ages, comorbidities, the inability of eating independently, hypoalbuminemia and hyponatremia with malnutrition. The proportion of COVID-19 patients who suffered from malnutrition was high. These results underscore the importance of early nutritional screening and assessment in COVID-19 patients, especially those with severe and critical infection.

The continuing heavy toll of the COVID-19 pandemic necessitates development of therapeutic options. We adopted structure-based drug repurposing to screen FDA-approved drugs for inhibitory effects against main protease enzyme (Mpro) substrate-binding pocket of SARS-CoV-2 for non-covalent and covalent binding. Top candidates were screened against infectious SARS-CoV-2 in a cell-based viral replication assay. Promising candidates included atovaquone, mebendazole, ouabain, dronedarone, and entacapone, although atovaquone and mebendazole were the only two candidates with IC50s that fall within their therapeutic plasma concentration. Additionally, we performed Mpro assays on the top hits, which demonstrated inhibition of Mpro by dronedarone (IC50 18 µM), mebendazole (IC50 19 µM) and entacapone (IC50 9 µM). Atovaquone showed only modest Mpro inhibition, and thus we explored other potential mechanisms. Although atovaquone is Dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH) inhibitor, we did not observe inhibition of DHODH at the respective SARS-CoV-2 IC50. Metabolomic profiling of atovaquone treated cells showed dysregulation of purine metabolism pathway metabolite, where ecto-5'-nucleotidase (NT5E) was downregulated by atovaquone at concentrations equivalent to its antiviral IC50. Atovaquone and mebendazole are promising candidates with SARS-CoV-2 antiviral activity. While mebendazole does appear to target Mpro, atovaquone may inhibit SARS-CoV-2 viral replication by targeting host purine metabolism.

Though cryopreservation of cell fractions is widely used in flow cytometry studies, whole blood cryopreservation is more challenging due to the presence of erythrocytes and effects of fixatives commonly used for preservation. Here, we evaluated and compared head-to-head the performance of four commercial whole blood cryopreservation kits; (1) Cytodelics, (2) Stable-Lyse V2 and Stable-Store V2 (SLSS-V2), (3) Proteomic stabilizer (PROT-1), and (4) Transfix. We found that PROT-1, Transfix, and Cytodelics maintained the distribution of major leukocyte subsets-granulocytes, T cells, natural killer cells, and B cells, on a comparable level to unpreserved samples, despite the attenuation of fluorescence intensities in flow cytometric assays. Moreover, these three stabilizers also maintained the activated phenotypes of neutrophils upon stimulation with N-formylmethionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine and lipopolysaccharides. The upregulation of adhesion molecules (CD11b), Fc receptors (CD16), and granule proteins (CD66b), as well as the shedding of surface L-selectin (CD62L), was conserved most efficiently in PROT-1 and Cytodelics when compared to samples only treated with erythrocyte lysing. However, none of the stabilizers provided a reliable detection of CCR7 for accurate quantification of T cell maturation stages. We also evaluated the performance of Cytodelics in longitudinal clinical samples obtained from acute COVID-19 patients, where it allowed reliable detection of lymphopenia and granulocyte expansion. These results support the feasibility of whole blood cryopreservation for immunophenotyping by flow cytometry, particularly in longitudinal studies. In conclusion, the performance of different stabilizers is variable and therefore the choice of stabilizers should depend on cell type of interest, as well as antibody clones and experimental design of each study.

Objectives: At the onset of COVID-19, whenever SARS-CoV-2 was detected at Children's Hospital 1 (CH1), the related department or building was closed for extensive tracing, testing, and medical isolation. This process disrupted hospital activities, reduced the efficiency of patient care, and used medical resources. To address this problem, CH1 implemented a system of grouping inpatients to color-coded areas from June to December 2021. Methods: In this retrospective study, we describe the system of grouping inpatients to color-coded areas based on SARS-CoV-2 test result at a 1,600-bed, national pediatric hospital in Ho Chi Minh City. Results: Inpatients were first separated into those with or without respiratory symptoms, and secondly to different color-coded areas based on SARS-CoV-2 test result and hospitalization length: red zone (days 1–3), orange zone (days 3–7), and green zone (day 7 onward). Prior to admission, all patients were tested with a SARS-CoV-2 rapid diagnostic test. If negative, the patient was admitted to the red zone. On days 3 and 7 of hospitalization, the patient was tested using a pooled RT-PCR method. Patients negative on day 3 were relocated to the orange zone;patients negative on day 7 were relocated to the green zone. A patient with a positive test result at any time point was transferred to a COVID-19 zone. One caregiver was allowed to stay with 1 patient with similar testing regimen. A mobile transportation team was set up to deliver food and other necessities;thus, movement was restricted and interaction was prevented among zones. After this system was implemented, COVID-19 cases were detected early, with most positive cases in the red zone (19.6%) and the orange zone (2.8%), with only 1 case in the green zone (0.7%). Conclusions: The system of grouping patients to color-coded areas helped prevent SARS-CoV-2 transmission within the hospital, allowing undisrupted operation.

This study explores the use of mobile phones for farm-related activities of ethnic minority farmers in Quang Tri province, Central Vietnam, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. A random sampling strategy was used to select 180 ethnic farmers, different by gender, age, and education level, to interview using a semi-structured questionnaire. Results indicate ethnic minority farmers used mobile phones for various purposes related to agriculture through phone calls and social media platforms (Facebook, Zalo, YouTube, etc.). Mobile phones have become essential for farmers to access and exchange market information, receive weather information, get extension advisories, learn new farming practices and technologies, contact and buy farm inputs, etc. There was a statistically significant association between gender, age, and education level with the purposes of mobile phone usage. Young and highly educated farmers should be prioritized in digital service development strategies since they are the pioneers who will be the leading groups of farmers in terms of using mobile phones for farm-related activities. Furthermore, the significance of female farmers' mobile phone use should not be overlooked, as when women have access to these devices, they can use them for various farming tasks to improve their agricultural production. Previous studies have investigated the effects of the pandemic on quality of life; both economical and psychosocial effects were explored. Some studies also mentioned mediating factors as mechanisms in this relationship; however, the mediating role of anxiety has not been examined. The present study examined the mediating effects of anxiety on the relationship between socioeconomic impact of COVID-19 and quality of life. An online survey of 280 Vietnamese residents was conducted in the context of the pandemic outbreak. Anxiety was found to be a completely mediating variable in the association between the socioeconomic impact of the pandemic and quality of life during the lockdown period. This finding contributes to a better understanding of how the pandemic affects people's quality of life and serves as the foundation for lessening the negative effects of the epidemic on people's lives.

The emergence of various social networks has generated vast volumes of data. Efficient methods for capturing, distinguishing, and filtering real and fake news are becoming increasingly important, especially after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. This study conducts a multiaspect and systematic review of the current state and challenges of graph neural networks (GNNs) for fake news detection systems and outlines a comprehensive approach to implementing fake news detection systems using GNNs. Furthermore, advanced GNN-based techniques for implementing pragmatic fake news detection systems are discussed from multiple perspectives. First, we introduce the background and overview related to fake news, fake news detection, and GNNs. Second, we provide a GNN taxonomy-based fake news detection taxonomy and review and highlight models in categories. Subsequently, we compare critical ideas, advantages, and disadvantages of the methods in categories. Next, we discuss the possible challenges of fake news detection and GNNs. Finally, we present several open issues in this area and discuss potential directions for future research. We believe that this review can be utilized by systems practitioners and newcomers in surmounting current impediments and navigating future situations by deploying a fake news detection system using GNNs.

The simultaneous occurrence of the COVID-19 pandemic and the transition to adulthood have posed particular obstacles to university students' mental health. However, it remains unclear whether hope promotes mental health in the relationship between self-compassion, psychological well-being, and life satisfaction. Therefore, this study investigated the role of hope as a mediator in the relationship between self-compassion, psychological well-being, and life satisfaction among Vietnamese undergraduate students in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants consisted of 484 students (aged 18-24) from several universities in Vietnam. To measure the four variables in the research model, we opted for the Self-Compassion Scale, the State Hope Scale, the World Health Organization 5-item Well-Being Index, and the Satisfaction With Life Scale. The results showed that (1) self-compassion was significantly positively correlated with psychological well-being, (2) self-compassion was not correlated with life satisfaction, (3) hope was a mediator of the relationship between self-compassion and psychological well-being, and (4) hope was a mediator of the relationship between self-compassion and life satisfaction. These findings suggest interventions on self-compassion to enhance hope and subsequently increase students' mental health, which offers colleges, psychologists, and psychiatrists a guideline to cope with harmful psychological implications during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Academic stress is rising among high school students, especially in light of the Covid-19 pandemic, such as social distancing, long-term online learning, and lack of social support. Many studies have also shown that students with high levels of academic stress have a higher risk of depression. However, very few researchers are interested in studying life satisfaction as a moderate factor for the indirect relationship between academic stress and depression. This study investigated whether life satisfaction factors moderate the indirect effect of academic stress on the depressive disorder in Vietnam adolescents. Participants include 1336 Vietnamese adolescents. Participants completed the Educational Stress Scale for Adolescents, Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, Satisfaction with Life Scale, and Beck Depression Inventory-II. Moderated mediation analyses were conducted using the PROCESS macro to investigate the relationship among variables. In the relationship between academic stress and depressive disorder in Vietnamese adolescents, resilience is partly mediated; life satisfaction significantly moderated the indirect effect of academic stress on depressive disorder. This study suggests that depressive disorders prevention and intervention practices for adolescents need to consider enhancing resilience and life satisfaction.

OBJECTIVE: To test the impact of varied physician recommendations on COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. METHODS: We conducted a vignette-based experimental survey on Prolific, an online research platform. COVID-19 vaccine hesitant, adult panel members were assigned to one of five messages that varied by recommendation style (participatory vs explicit) and strategy (acknowledgement of concerns; comparison to the flu shot; statement that millions of people have already received it; emphasis on protecting others). Vaccine hesitancy was re-assessed with the question, "Would you get vaccinated at this visit?". RESULTS: Of the 752 participants, 60.1% were female, 43.4% Black, 23.6% Latino, and 33.0% White; mean age was 35.6 years. Overall, 33.1% of the initially "not sure" and 13.1% of the initially "no" participants became less hesitant following any recommendation. Among the "not sure" participants, 20.3% of those who received a participatory recommendation became less hesitant compared with 34.3%- 39.5% for the explicit recommendations. The "protect others" message was most effective among initially "no" participants; 19.8% become less hesitant, compared to 8.7% for the participatory recommendation. CONCLUSION: A physician recommendation may reduce COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: An explicit recommendation and "protect others" message appear to be important elements of a physician recommendation for COVID-19 vaccination.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic has been an alarming situation worldwide for the past 2 years. The symptoms of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are not only confined to the respiratory system but also affect a multitude of organ systems. Bradycardia associated with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a rare autonomic and peripheral neurological complication of COVID-19. In this case report, we present the case of a 26-year-old man diagnosed with bradycardia associated with GBS after contracting COVID-19. Initially, this patient had the classical symptoms of COVID-19 and was hospitalized in the intensive care unit (ICU) for acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Then, he developed weakness in the lower extremities, diminished tendon reflexes, a loss of sensation without sphincter muscle disorders, and bradycardia. His bradycardia did not respond to atropine. The patient was treated concurrently with a high-flow nasal cannula, systemic corticosteroids, anticoagulation, and therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) for COVID-19-induced ARDS, bradycardia, and GBS. His ARDS and bradycardia improved after the first cycle of TPE and medical treatment. After three cycles of TPE, the patient progressively recovered his muscle strength in the lower limbs and regained peripheral sensation. He was discharged from the hospital in stable condition after 4 weeks of hospitalization and was followed up after 6 months for cardiorespiratory and neurological complications. This case report elucidates the potential difficulties and challenges that physicians may encounter in diagnosing and treating COVID-19-induced bradycardia and GBS during the pandemic outbreak. However, the patient outcomes with the treatment combining the conventional treatment with therapeutic plasma exchange seem to be optimistic.

Niclosamide has been proposed as a possible candidate for a Covid-19 drug. However, the metabolites of niclosamide are difficult to investigate because they are usually not available commercially or they are quite expensive in the commercial market. In this study, the major metabolite of niclosamide in human liver microsomes (HLMs) was confirmed to be 3-OH niclosamide. Because the production of 3-OH niclosamide using HLMs has a slow turnover rate, a new method of producing niclosamide metabolite with an easier and highly cost-efficient method was thus conducted. Bacterial CYP102A1 (BM3) is one of the bacterial cytochrome P450s (CYPs) from Bacillus megaterium that structurally show similar activities to human CYPs. Here, the BM3 mutants were used to produce niclosamide metabolites and the metabolites were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography and LC-mass spectrometry. Among a set of mutants tested here, BM3 M14 mutant was the most active in producing 3-OH niclosamide, the major metabolite of niclosamide. Comparing BM3 M14 and HLMs, BM3 M14 production of 3-OH niclosamide was 34-fold higher than that of HLMs. Hence, the engineering of BM3 can be a cost-efficient method to produce 3-OH niclosamide.
